Creative Leeway

A couple of weeks ago, I was given an assignment to design a clientโ€™s blog. Being my fifth week of work as an intern, this will be my first full-length project. Iโ€™ve been given a lot of leeway with it, as itโ€™s more creative of a medium than other websites Iโ€™ve been a part of designing. That creative freedom was both exciting and daunting.

Luckily, the client sent us a few links of other blog pages that she liked. At least I had a jumping off point. But after designing the wireframe, my process slowed a bit. Thereโ€™s a lot that goes into the design of a web page (maybe even more than I had expected). I didnโ€™t quite know where to start. What font and color should the title be? Should the blog posts be centered or left aligned? What options should I put on the side bar? These questions barely scraped the surface for me. We donโ€™t use templates at our company (thankfully) so every step is another decision to be made.

Finally I learned to just jump in. Instead of trying to plan the entire blog page in my head, I began executing each decision I thought about, and then going from there. Itโ€™s become much easier since that point. Now the process is flowing more naturally as I watch my thoughts come to life on the screen.
